Tenderpixel & tenderproduct present T E N D E R F L I X : a selection of experimental film, video and animation shorts.

Since 2008, Tenderpixel has been collaborating with Rushes, heading the experimental component for the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival. This DVD compilation was critically chosen from an extensive call for submissions and juried competition. It provides an opportunity to view some of the most intriguing contemporary experimental films from all over the world.

For the 4th year, Tenderpixel will convert into a mini-cinema for a week, as part of the RUSHES Soho Shorts Festival. This year’s screening includes:

We are also proud to present in the top floor of Tenderpixel an installation by art & design collaborative Garudio Studiage, as well as, live cyber performances by California artist, Morrisa Maltz throughout the day.

Tenderproduct is pleased to present the new window exhibition by Garudio Studiage: Royal Celebration Sensation will bring a slice of Vegas to London, in a supremely kitsch take on the fun, folly and fever surrounding this year’s Royal Wedding! The collective brings a royal twist to their obsession with animals with a Vegas-style wedding chapel scene for a very loved up pair of cardboard corgis.The shop window becomes a mixed-up celebration with the happy couple surrounded by tongue-in-cheek souvenirs and witty side-swipes at the hype surrounding the event. For saleare ironically rebellious tea towels featuring real newspaper headlines that state the Queen’s official opinion on souvenirs and the public opinion on the clean up bill, whilst other products include oversized cardboard cut outs of the infamous engagement ring and wearable magnetic lips that force lovers to kiss. Unlike the real wedding, the invitation for this visual feast is extended to everyone so why not come down and get an eyeful of the semi-patriotic pie…!

Garudio Studiage is a Peckham-based creative collective set up by Chris Ratcliffe, Laura Cave, Anna Walsh and Hannah Havana. With individual specialisms in screen printing, jewellery and painting, the group also work together and with friends, taking part in a wonderfully bizarre array of exhibitions and events, as well as making props, displays and products. The appropriately glamourous and unpronounceable name is derived from the words ‘Garage studio’ which is exactly where the venture started out in 2003. Working amongst sand, stray cats and broken car parts, the collective started making screen prints and jewellery for sale and exhibition, and thus the mighty Garudio Studiage was born. More recent times have seen a move to new premises and an expanding list of clients and projects, as well as the Garudio and Friends online shop.

Unfolding Spaces, new window exhibition by Popupology

UNFOLDING SPACES | PART OF THE PAPERINVASION SERIES

Tenderproduct is pleased to present Unfolding Spaces: tenderproduct’s new window installation by Popupology. Unfolding Spaces combines numerous sculptural forms cut and folded out of paper to build into a modular composition. The abstract pieces will interact to explore a kinetic sculptural system that produces an optical effect when viewed by people as they walk past the shop window. Many little curious invaders will be crowding the ambient space, wandering about the aesthetic of the shiny origami shapes. The magic interaction between light and paper sculpture will brighten Cecil Court for three weeks from the 10^th of March. Mini-sculptures, such as “Concertina”, “Paperinvaders” Bookmarks, “Kineticards” and more products linked with this exhibition will be available in the shop from the 10^th of March. …Who loves paper?

Elod Beregszaszi is a paper artist and founder of Popupology Studio.

Hungarian, London based, Beregszaszi attended a Foundation in Art & Design at Camberwell College and a BA in Intermedia at Kingston University: he has been making, cutting and folding paper for over 10 years. His interest in origami techniques was sparked by a trip to Japan, when he discovered Masahiro Chatani, creator of origami architecture.

The greatest challenge is to derive kinetic forms from a single sheet of materialwith an economy of cutting and folding that wastes as little of the originalPpaper as possible. As a result the created forms produce a balanced optical aesthetic. Beregszaszi exhibited throughout London and Budapest since 2007.

ALMOST HUMAN, WORKS 1995-2010

BOOK LAUNCH FRIDAY 4 MARCH 5.30-6.30PM

Artist Tero Puha’s first book Almost Human will be launched in the UK at Tenderproduct 4 March 2011. The event also marks the release of Superhuman – a limited edition of 50 of a special edition of Almost Human. Presented in a metal bag, the limited edition also includes a signed, previously unpublished, pigment print by Puha from 1995.

The extensive volume covers Puha’s production from 1995 to 2010. The works presented in the book include Puha’s Pop Art pieces, his monochromatic studies of the body as well as video projects and installations. There are also numerous previously unpublished pictures. Essays in the book are written by leading Finnish art experts: Leevi Haapala, Livia Hekanaho, Anna-Kaisa Rastenberger, Leena-Maija Rossi and Annamari Vänskä. The book also includes an interview with the artist himself.

The book covers many controversial projects that over the years have both shocked and amused the Finnish public: The Shop of Basic Needs installation (1997) in Helsinki sold canned emotions and mental states. Man Gang Showroom (2001) offered consumers different male types with accessories, and Swap and Go Organ Fair (2003) marketed cloned body parts of movie stars for customers dissatisfied with their own body. The Love and Lust Museum project (1995–2010) was a tongue-in-cheek account of two fictitious B movie stars Linda Lust and Cheryl Love. The book also contains material from Puha’s latest short film projects.

Tero Puha (b. 1971 in Finland) is a visual artist working with photography, video and digital art. In his artistic work, he often explores the life of the modern individual, focusing on body image, identity, gender roles and consumerism. Attempts to define the line between the natural and the unnatural are bound to create conflicts and pressures for the modern individual in search of identity and purpose in life. These are the sources of Puha’s inspiration. Tero Puha graduated from the Imatra Institute of Art (1996) and subsequently graduated with an MFA from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (2000). Since then he has worked in Helsinki, London, Paris, Berlin and New York. His work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in the collections of several art museums.

ALMOST HUMAN – THE WRITERS

Leevi Haapala is a researcher of contemporary art, curator and art writer. He works as a curator for collections at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiasma in Helsinki.

Livia Hekanaho received her PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Helsinki in 2006. She holds positions as an Adjunct Professor at the Universities of Turku and Oulu, Finland. Currently she is a Lecturer in Finnish language, literary theory and cultural studies. She has edited two academic books and published extensively on feminist and queer studies in Finnish and English.

Anna-Kaisa Rastenberger (MA) is the Chief Curator at The Finnish Museum of Photography. She is an art historian and is writing her dissertation on Finnish contemporary photography. Rastenberger has lectured at Helsinki University, the University of Art and Design Helsinki and several other institutions. Previously Rastenberger has worked as editor-in-chief of KUVA, a Finnish magazine on visual culture.

Leena-Maija Rossi (PhD) is Associate Professor in Gender Studies at the University of Helsinki. Her research interests include representations and intersections of gender, sexuality and ethnicities in media culture and contemporary art. Rossi also works as a freelance curator.

Annamari Vänskä (PhD), is researcher of visual culture, contemporary art and fashion, and her expertise is in gender studies and queer theory. She works as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Fashion Studies at the University of Stockholm, Sweden.

Tenderproduct is pleased to present Being Trees, a new window exhibition by Alessandra Pirovano.

In Being Trees the artist reflects on morals expectations, boundaries and utilitarian norms that are imposed consciously and subconsciously in order to establish or define a kind of identity. Humans often burst out of these enclosures to follow their own spiritual and emotional paths.

That’s why Alessandra’s Being Trees is such a happy outcome. Her grove expresses an empathetic relationship betweenman and nature, a metaphor of her research on human identity forever balanced between settlement and nomadism.

‘Miranda’s Trees’ * (after her ‘How beauteous mankind is!’ in The Tempest) have hearts, brains, eyes, bones and blood that have blossomed as most surprising multicoloured foliages. Without passing judgment, these trees preserve and love the heartbeats, breath and memories of the errant humans during their personal quests. The result is a far from orthodox landscape, an amused celebration of the never-ending search for our unique path to identity. Miranda’s Trees will be on exhibit in Tenderproduct’s window space from the 30th of November until the 7th of December. And many more shapes, colours and genres are available on request from the arist. Come out and visit the truly unique grove blossoming on Cecil Court.

Alessandra Vittoria Pirovano attended Milan’s Accademia di Belle Arti and has taken Central St Martin’s course on textile design. In Milan she has worked with Franco Maria Ricci, Abitare and Larousse, and with Victoria Chaplin’s Cirque Imaginaire, designed fabrics for Interflex, and a series of t-shirts inspired by Saint- Exupery’s The Little Prince. She is producing unique hand-made notebooks in her series Blossoms of My Brain, whose covers are illustrated with her peculiar creatures. We are pleased to present the launch event for our new basement space: an area featuring a brand new collection of books, limited edition artist prints and original artist drawings and sculptures. From landscape photographs to fantastic monsters, from coloured shapes on canvas to linocut ties and digital prints of an embroidered princess Leia, you will travel into different dimensions and also encounter witty and humorous content.

The product shop’s basement is a space that encourages artists and their creativity, and a space that lets visitors enjoy the creative flow as well as some stellar books.

YOU CAN – John Youssef

Tenderproduct is pleased to present You Can, a new window exhibition by John Youssef. The You Can installation employs the symbolism of candles as part of a revisioned campaign of optimism. Candles are self sufficient, practical and useful, they shed light, represent clarity, rebirth, truth, hope and transparency. For Youssef, ‘In a culture where the real and oracular messages are eclipsed by advertising and wealth, we have the pure presented to us in the form of something mainstream and digestible.’ You Can investigates this concept: Candles as cans = Can-dle.

Youssef’s exhibition flitters between reality & dreams, necessity & consumption and even form & function. You Can – a two part window exhibition employing matches and Can-dles – a manifesto on lightness, positivity and potential.

John Youssef is a visual artist and writer based in Yorkshire. He was born in Canada the year Ghostbusters was released and has spent most of his life in England. In recent years he has worked and exhibited overseas. Youssef’s work relies on the candid and the literal, he takes great pleasure in creating work that disguises the ancient as something more modern, camouflaging itself in the everyday.

Youssef’s Can-dles will be available at Tenderproduct from 9 November. The artist handmakes and pours each Can-dle. They come in two different sizes/versions and are part of a limited run. He has also created bespoke packaging for each Can-dle including, a leaflet on the impact of light, as well as a single match. For Tenderproduct there will also be an exclusive limited red candle edition available. Can-dles will be available for purchase throughout the exhibition and also afterwards during the run up to the holidays. The You Can exhibition runs from November 9 – 22.
